Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Building 17
Laurel, Maryland, USA

ARCADIS subsidiary, RTKL, was selected by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory to design their new Building 17 at the Laurel, Maryland campus.

Building 17 is a six-story 242,000 SF multipurpose facility containing offices, computer laboratory and support spaces. Other special components of the building are a Security Operations Center, Disaster Recovery Center, Conference Center, Food Service Cafeteria, Fitness Center, Recreation Center, and Medical Clinic.

The design for Building 17 has resulted in a building that is harmonious with the existing campus architecture and sets a precedent for the intended future development of the campus. The goals were to design a building that met the programmatic and technical criteria, conveying an architectural expression of JHU-APL’s mission and meeting established criteria for durability and cost. Its form and aesthetics will embody the "state-of-the-art" world class image and mission of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and create a new corporate campus aesthetic. The project was bid under budget and design was completed on schedule in two bid packages in order to expedite an early start to construction.
